Dear Honey (also known as Camille Shaughnessy),
Thank you for sharing your life with me, for indulging the questions of a wide-eyed girl with a tape recorder. Thank you for giving life to the past, which I have now collected in flawed fashion. Thank you for giving me Don’s letters and allowing me into the lives you lived throughout WWII.
My novel Why Aren’t You Sweet Like Me?? is based on you; more importantly, it is because of you. I can only hope to have the lasting impression that you’ve held for so many family members, friends, and fans. We are all better for having known you and your generosity. Your stories are now immortal. And so now, on the eve of your 93rd birthday, I toast your good health, your long life, and the years to come. Love you.
